Treatment and Prevention

Periodontal treatment is focused on addressing the diseases and conditions that affect the gums, bones, and other supporting structures of the teeth. Periodontal disease begins with an infection in the gums caused by bacteria found in plaque. If left untreated, it can lead to inflammation, bone damage, and tooth loss. Some common risk factors for periodontal disease include poor nutrition, smoking, stress, pregnancy, genetics, diabetes, and certain medications.

Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease and is characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily. It can be reversed through good oral hygiene and treatment from a dentist. Periodontitis, a more severe and chronic form of the disease, can cause rapid bone destruction and is commonly found in adults. It progresses slowly and can result in gum recession and pocket formation.

Treatment and Prevention

Preventing periodontal disease is best done through good oral hygiene practices and regular dental check-ups. This includes daily brushing and flossing, as well as professional cleanings at least twice a year. In cases where general treatment is not effective, surgical procedures such as pocket reduction, soft tissue grafts, and bone regeneration may be recommended. In instances of tooth loss, dental implants may also be an option.
